Sciatica: Causes, Symptoms, and Prevention

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg. This condition is usually caused by compression of the sciatic nerve due to spinal problems, osteoarthritis, herniated discs, or conditions such as diabetes. In severe cases, surgical intervention may be required.



Symptoms of Sciatica

  • Sharp pain or muscle spasm in the leg

  • Tingling or burning sensation down the leg

  • Pain in the lower back and buttocks

  • Pain that feels like an electric shock

  • Worsening pain when sitting for long periods


Risk Factors

  • Aging

  • Obesity and excess body weight

  • Jobs that require heavy lifting or long hours of driving

  • Prolonged sitting without movement

  • Diabetes


Possible Complications

  • Muscle weakness in the affected leg

  • Loss of bowel or bladder control

  • Permanent nerve damage

  • Reduced mobility if left untreated


Prevention and Treatment

  • Choose a chair with proper lumbar support when sitting for long periods

  • Apply hot or cold compresses to relieve pain

  • Practice light exercises and stretching

  • Avoid prolonged standing or sitting

  • Maintain proper posture and bend your knees when lifting heavy objects

  • Seek medical advice for medication or physical therapy sessions if necessary
