🔹 What Is Gastroenteritis?

Gastroenteritis, commonly known as stomach flu, is an infection that affects the digestive system due to viral or bacterial causes. It leads to symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and loss of appetite.
This infection is highly contagious and can spread through contaminated food, water, or close contact with an infected person.

In most cases, gastroenteritis is mild and can be treated at home. The condition usually lasts up to a week and improves on its own. Treatment mainly focuses on relieving symptoms, maintaining hydration, and preventing dehydration.

Signs of recovery appear gradually — bowel movements return to normal, stool becomes more solid, and nausea and vomiting decrease progressively. However, in some cases, medical treatment or medication may be required for complete recovery.

  1. Viral infections (e.g., Norovirus, Rotavirus)

  2. Bacterial infections (e.g., Salmonella, E. coli)

  3. Parasitic infections (e.g., Giardia)

  4. Other causes, such as:

    • Chemotherapy drugs

    • Heavy metal poisoning (lead, mercury)

    • Toxic mushrooms or marine algae

    • Overuse of certain medications such as antibiotics, laxatives, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and antacids.

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Loss of appetite

  • Abdominal pain and cramps

  • General weakness and fatigue

In children, dehydration may occur, marked by dizziness, dry mouth, cracked lips, and reduced urination.

    • Anti-nausea and anti-diarrheal medications

    • Antibiotics (only if the cause is bacterial)

  2. Stay hydrated:
    Drink 2–3 liters of water daily to prevent dehydration caused by vomiting and diarrhea.

  3. Rest:
    Ensure adequate rest to help your body recover.

  4. Oral rehydration solutions or IV fluids:
    Recommended in severe cases to replace lost minerals and fluids.

  5. Disinfect hard surfaces such as tables, faucets, and doorknobs using a chlorine-water solution.

  6. Wash hands thoroughly after using the bathroom and before meals.

  7. Keep living areas clean and well-ventilated.

  8. Eat light and easily digestible foods.

  9. Get vaccinated against rotavirus, especially for children.

  • Spicy or heavily seasoned meals

  • The patient cannot drink fluids for several hours
